Rosalie plot

The year is 1870. Young Rosalie shaves more often than the other girls because of the rapid hair growth she has had to deal with all her life. Her face also has to believe it, nevertheless she refuses to be labeled a freak. When she meets the café owner Abel, they get married, although he is mainly interested in the money as he is in debt. He is therefore not aware of her condition. However, Rosalie wants to feel accepted as a woman and decides to stop hiding her secret.

In 1870, twenty-something Rosalie [Nadia Terszkiewicz] is actually married off by her father [Gustave Kervern] to the unattractive café owner Abel Deluc [Benoît Magimel]. Rosalie makes a bet with regular customer Pierre [Guillaume Gouix] that she can grow a natural beard. To everyone's surprise, she succeeds and as soon as the news about the 'bearded woman' spreads, the ailing café grows into a success. Rosalie is also blossoming and feels more and more at home in her new environment. Until short-sighted men, and the influential Barcelin [Benjamin Biolay] in particular, begin to deliberately sabotage her reputation. It took five people to put the scenario together and this is especially noticeable in the last quarter. That scenario lacks some coherence anyway, but towards the end it is barely possible to make sense of it. The melodramatic denouement comes as a bolt from the blue.

Well, it is one that somewhat follows the well-worn route of a story about an outsider with a secret who wants to be accepted. But there is still a beautiful, beating heart in the film, which is beautifully shot and provided with beautiful music. As long as the characters can get you involved, you will be able to enjoy this and experience their peaks and valleys. You can read my full review here.
