The film starts classically. A group of people is put in a dire situation in which they must survive. Instead of working together, the group becomes torn apart. In the first part of the film, tension is generated by director and writer Andreas Schaap. After that, the thriller aspect fades into the background and the film changes into a drama that has death counseling as its main underlying theme.
Surrealistic perceptions of main character Greta create a peculiar atmosphere. The precarious situation, which was clearly framed at first, becomes more shadowy and less tangible. More ominous too. Anna Fischer who plays the role of Greta is well chosen. Like the nature of the film, the nature of her role is also transforming. From a victim in a thriller she changes into the instigator of a mysterious drama. She plays Greta powerfully and with conviction. She's captivating. So is the story, but confusing.
Andreas Schaap, who some time after the making of the film was presented with the choice whether or not to artificially feed his mother, struggles in this film with the theme of care for dying. It theme comes to the viewer through Greta's world of thoughts. Sometimes ominous. Sometimes confrontational. Sometimes blurry. Sometimes melodramatic. But always surprising and stimulating.
Das Letzte Abteil is a strange little film that sometimes feels a bit stage-like and unnatural. The film features quirky characters who exhibit strange behavior and sometimes look more like ghosts than flesh and blood people. They dwell in a world that is filled with surrealistic experiences and perceptions. Somewhere between all these elements is the main theme of the film. A theme that is not easily explained.
