Sweet Dreams plot

1900. A remote island teeming with flora and fauna. In the midst of the umpteenth sugar crisis, patriarch Jan, head of a sugar factory, dies. His two wives are left to fend for themselves: Agathe, his wife on paper, and Siti, the native mother of his bastard son. A family reunion follows. When the boy turns out to be the only heir, it is man, woman, child, plant and animal for himself.

Indonesia, around 1900. The future of a sugar plantation is in jeopardy when the Dutch owner [Hans Dagelet] suddenly dies. It turns out that he did not leave the plantation to his wife Agathe [Renée Soutendijk] or his son Cornelis [Florian Myjer], but to the illegitimate son [Rio Kaj den Haas] that he received from his house slave and mistress Siti [Hayati Azis]. Agathe is in sackcloth and ashes, Cornelis comes with his heavily pregnant wife [Lisa Zweerman] to put things in order in order to make a profit. That may seem like the basis for an interesting joust, but Sendijarevic seems mainly interested in what she sees as a revisionist view of the colonial past of the Netherlands. Revisionist, because she tells the story from the perspective of the women. It is not subtle, but it is extremely (and at times cringe-worthy) melodramatic.

The tight scenario (see, for example, how the opening and closing scenes mirror each other) is tightly filmed in hermetically sealed frames (which only appear a bit strange in the exterior shots). The film stylishly balances on the balance between realism and absurdism without losing credibility.

And it's also about something.

This was reminiscent of Van Warmerdam, yes, but clearly less so in all areas. This film is particularly lacking in the area of black humor, mainly due to the mediocre actors. Soutendijk is still going, that young couple tends towards the laughably bad. Visually nice but never really interesting. Only towards the end with a dreamy dance does it actually become interesting. It's also a shame about the narrow film format, a disease in the arthouse in any case over the last two years. All in all, not a real film, rather a kind of stage play that is not empathetic and is not convincing in what it should be or even fun or interesting. 1.5*.
