Hyakka plot
On New Year's Eve, Izumi finds his mother Yuriko wandering in a park in the freezing cold. With a diagnosis of dementia, her mind begins to fade quickly. Yet to her son, the memories of the mother raising him on her own feel as vivid as the day he lived them, especially those of the time she disappeared from his world, which haunts him to this day. As Yuriko slowly fades into oblivion, Izumi has to come to terms with the loss of his mother again, this time for good. However, on his way to forgiveness within himself, Izumi soon discovers Yuriko's secret past and the life she led without him.

A poignant portrait of a woman suffering from dementia in which the difficult contact with her son is forced or forced to take on a different dimension. I thought it was such a strange first fifteen minutes, but later it became clear that there was something more going on. The son has a kind of love-hate relationship with his mother. The contact is very stiff, distant. She, on the other hand, wants to reminisce and make closer contact.
The film slumps a bit halfway through, but comes through at the end. This may also have to do with the fact that as Westerners we are a little too familiar with Japanese culture, where emotions and family still have a different approach.
Mieko Harada plays the young and old Yuriko. Well, it's not always easy to have the same character of different ages played by the same actor/actress. And I also did not always find Suda convincing in the heavy and ambivalent role he had to play. A little too hesitant sometimes. For the rest it's a great movie.
