The opening of this slow, chatty drama sets the tone. Teacher Samet [Deniz Celiloglu] returns after a holiday during a heavy snowfall to the village where he is spending his fourth and final year as an art history teacher. Ceylan uses minutes to show something he could have done in a few seconds: it's snowing, it's cold, it's remote. This film consists of too many slowing down moments and statically filmed conversations about the meaning and nonsense of life. Interwoven is a fascinating storyline in which Samet and his colleague Kenan [Musab Ekici], with whom he lives, are accused of inappropriate behavior. Because the school management refuses to clarify who made these accusations, Samet's frustration is increasing. As long as it focuses on the causes and consequences of this conflict, it is often fascinating. As soon as the tea is served and all kinds of loosely related themes are introduced, it becomes sleep-inducingly boring. Ece Bagci is exceptional as one of the students involved.

Finally caught up. For Ceylan you have to take your time. Here again. The focus is on Samet, an art teacher who is counting down his days in the forgotten hole in Anatolia, because next year he will go to Istanbul where his qualities will be appreciated.

He criticizes the village mentality, the narrow minds and few prospects they have for the future. Not that he always sets a good example for this. He also seems to have been infected by the ambitionless virus.

When he is accused of inappropriate behavior, he experiences this as unfair. In addition, the film focuses on the triangular relationship between him, his fellow resident and Nuray, also a teacher in a neighboring school. Interesting and entertaining at times. Ceylan also has beautiful pictures of the snow or the surroundings. Picturesquely beautiful!

After winter comes summer. The grass that was covered in snow yesterday is already dry today due to the heat. An abrupt contrast, also recognizable in humans...

It is the theme that Nuri Bilge Ceylan's slow cinema film has in mind and that he mainly presents in clever, dazzling dialogue work, with the scene (the dinner) between the two opponents, Samet, the man with the loose bond. with life, individualist, egoist, pessimist, convinced that ultimately nothing can be achieved in life and Nuray, deeply affected by setbacks but believing in the real values of life.

A very beautiful film in which the director also proves to be at home in portraying portraits, drawings and landscapes. Nice change between the intense conversations to follow. A fine ensemble with lived-in performances in which actress Merve Dizdar was praised in Cannes.
