Kiddo (2023)

Lu [Rosa van Leeuwen] lives in a childcare center and is of course overjoyed when her mother Karina [Friede Barnhard] comes to visit her. When Karina mentions that she wants to take Lu to Poland to get money from her mother, Lu isn't sure what to do. Soon Lu finds herself caught up in her mother's Hollywood fantasies. A strange road movie full of references to old films that children overlook, but also add nothing to adults (and film connoisseurs). There is a pleasant chemistry between the two protagonists and Van Leeuwen in particular impresses, but the screenplay does not give the characters any depth and hobbles meaninglessly from incident to incident. An odd road movie, but not the best.

Finally a Dutch film with multiple layers and depth. Beautifully depicted atmosphere, a sight to see in terms of images and choice of clothing, for example (I normally don't look at that that way, but remarkably nicely done). A good story where the dynamics between mother and child are beautifully presented and psychologically well structured. The film is touching and at the same time has a nice sense of humor and is fun to watch.
