It is interesting to hear experts talk about works of art, but unfortunately many art documentaries are more about unimportant people around them, as in this case when an exhibition about Vermeer is the starting point: we learn a lot about the people who work in a museum and organize an exhibition very little about Vermeer and his work. Now Vermeer is a mystery – 'the Spynx of Delft' – but there must be something to tell about his work because we are told that libraries full have been written about Vermeer and his work. Fortunately, we do get to hear about Vermeer's work, especially through the enthusiasm of the experts who spontaneously weep when they talk about Vermeer's genius and through long digressions about some works of which it is not certain whether they are by Vermeer or whether they are therefore belong in the exhibition.

But perhaps Vermeer also needs few words: his paintings speak for themselves, albeit in riddles, because it is not only characteristic of Vermeer that he transforms an everyday scene in the corner of an everyday room into a miniature world that, thanks to a careful composition, of shapes and colors as a kind of forerunner of abstract art seems to be detached from reality, but they also tell a story – usually about a woman so that it also receives a feminist interpretation today – which the viewer has to guess. The mystery seems inherent to his work (and his person) and that is part of what makes his work so fascinating.

This documentary follows Gregor JM Weber as he prepares for an exhibition of Johannes Vermeer's works at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. A particularly difficult task, because only 37 works have been attributed to Vermeer and about 16 of them there is doubt about the authenticity. Weber has to travel the world to persuade other museums to borrow their work and has the authenticity of some doubtful cases investigated. The pressure is visible and provides the necessary drama, but we also witness the genuine admiration for Vermeer and the feelings that come out of holding a masterpiece. And with the help of specialists, the layman also gains insight into what makes Vermeer so unique and how you can distinguish a masterpiece from a mediocre imitation.
