Toen Ik Je Zag plot

To the outside world, actor couple Esther (Noortje Herlaar) and Bastiaan (Egbert-Jan Weeber) lead a dream life. Both wildly popular, playing one role after the other, an idyllic farm where they live with their two children and still beaming in love. But there is a side of their lives that few see. Away from the cameras, the depressions, fears and maddening uncertainty that Bastiaan struggles with have an increasing impact on him and their relationship. Esther tries with all her might to keep her great love and her family on track, but the illness in Bastiaans head is difficult to fight.

Surprisingly strong. Against my expectations (/prejudice?) Egbert-Jan Weeber is doing fine. But the emotional center of gravity of the film is of course with Noortje Herlaar. She is wearing this film - the first Dutch film by director and screenwriter Ben Verbong since 1994! - then also with verve. Wise decision to change the names, by the way. It took me a while, but after half an hour I was in the movie, I would never have succeeded without Verbong's choice.

3.5*

As a great fan of Antonie Kamerling, I was really looking forward to this film! Ben Verbong has portrayed this story so well, dramatically, very emotionally and very heavily. A fantastic comeback from Ben in the Netherlands.

Already at the opening text about Antonie Kamerling, the popular actor who committed suicide, I already became emotional and then the song Toen in je Zag was incorporated into the soundtrack and you saw the title on screen, then I couldn't keep it dry anymore. I was immediately in it myself, but I can understand if you have to get used to it, it is of course about Antonie Kamerling and Isa Hoes, but in the film they are called Bastiaan and Esther, which I could not get used to completely, but for a certain distance cares.

What I especially did not expect is that I found Egbert-Jan Weber really strong in this film, an actor I normally have nothing to do with. Sometimes he really had that Antonie look. I normally find Noortje Herlaar very good, but unfortunately she was very disappointing in this film, found her unconvincing and actually a small miscast. Perhaps also because Egbert-Jan looks very much like Antonie and Noortje is not at all like Isa, even if you can't compare them, you will.

The fountain scene hit me the most, where Weeber says he would always be there for the kids. A sentence with a huge load of emotion.

Be sure to see him! It must be said that it is not the best film for people who are not feeling well.

I am not entirely enthusiastic about this drama about the suicide of Antonie Kamerling and the run-up to it. Because the outcome was known, the question of why kept me busy. The film does not answer that. What I especially remember is the solid performance of Noortje Herlaar, who pulls the film all the way to herself and ensures that the film ultimately still scores a sufficient score.
