Forty years ago, spectacular predictions were made about robots. They would do the housework and all the chores for us, cut our working hours in half and drive our cars. None of that came to fruition. If there's a table in the way, they still bump into it.

The problem with artificial intelligence is that it will always remain artificial. A robot cannot make decisions, cannot be creative, cannot do anything for which it is not programmed. Yet you keep getting that terrifying vision of artificial beings taking over.

TIM is a house robot who makes a very neat, polite impression, but is increasingly behaving like a psychopath. Georgina Campbell plays the owner who initially trusts him implicitly. However, not everything you see on a screen is true. A nice detail is that Paul will start using Bakelite telephones again, because they are not tapped. It could be one of those episodes of Black Mirror, where modern technology makes things spiral out of control. It is not believable, but it is entertaining.

Still quite creepy... And perhaps also a warning for our future?

TIM

The story follows Abi, a prosthetics technician who moves to the countryside with her husband Paul for her new position at Integrate Robotics. As part of her job, she receives a prototype humanoid AI robot called TIM

I generally enjoyed this film, although I have to say that this is mainly due to the second part. I found the first part rather boring. Only when TIM starts to show dangerous traits does the story really get interesting. The way he manages to manipulate Abi is intriguing, although I have to admit that I was sometimes annoyed by Abi's choices.

The film also does not shy away from violence, and even a few kills are not avoided. Unfortunately, it never really managed to become exciting. This is partly due to the lack of atmosphere and predictability. With a better execution, this could have had much more impact. Despite these shortcomings, the film does make you think about the future and the risks of artificial intelligence.

2.5 stars.
