Every day, a father and his son parachute out of their house hanging from a high, icy rock wall. They fly to the village on the ground and sell their own ice cream.

A short animation that tells a moving story, using beautiful imagery. The film speaks of loss and connection. A story told by Portuguese director and writer João Gonzalez in just a few scenes and in just 14 minutes. It's about a man and his son who live isolated on a mountain. They parachute down to the valley every day and sell ice cubes. The film follows them in their daily routine.
Gradually, you realize that the two are connected not only in a familial sense but also in a tragic sense. That's moving. When the film's final scene reveals the magnitude of the tragedy, it's even more moving. A haunting score and haunting imagery are all that's needed to evoke that feeling. The snow and ice backdrop is beautiful and unique. The animations aren't complex but express precisely what's needed. Ice Merchants is a brilliant short film.
