Metronom plot
"We all keep the secret."
Freedom under the despotic regime of Ceauşescu is hard to find. Young people live in great uncertainty about their future. The film follows 17-year-old Ana, who is reluctantly dragged into a totalitarian nightmare after listening to the clandestinely broadcast radio program Metronom with her friends.

In 1972, Nicolae Ceaușescu is firmly in control in Romania. Some exam candidates get together to listen to the Romanian spoken music program 'Metronom' that can be heard on Radio Free Europe, even though one of them has to have a letter sent through an intermediary in a cumbersome way. The young people cannot foresee the consequences of this act. The introduction takes some time. When the friends are apprehended by members of the Securitate and ordered to write and sign a statement, things get a lot more interesting. Unfortunately, Belc does little with the tension he manages to build up in that part. He seems to have focused mainly on two sex scenes that, at least I suspect, should show that main character Ana [Mara Bugarin] has experienced personal growth through what happened between those scenes. Despite strong acting by the young cast, this arouses little interest

Nice image of the rebellious youth of the time in a dictatorship that unfortunately does not always fascinate. Certainly the first three quarters of an hour the film can even be called boring. Visually little to experience and the characters are not very special either. However, the movie does get better. Anyway with some music during that party (more fun to watch) and especially the second half to see how pressure is put on individuals and not even much pressure (at least none or hardly any violence, purely psychological and soon it is arranged) is necessary to get people back in line. With that, the film says and shows a lot of interesting things (in a nice observing and static way that is good), just a pity about the boring form, especially in the first three quarters of an hour. 3.0*.

An interesting look at how things could have been during Ceaucescu's communist period. Now, in East Germany you would have had similar scenes and controls, but it is fascinating to see it from a Romanian angle as well.
The most captivating scenes are those when they are forced to write an essay. It seems non-committal, but it is anything but. It is quite intimidating and deviant behavior will not be tolerated. The slightest resistance is suppressed and then it soon becomes clear that they mean business. There is also no hesitation in involving family to add extra pressure.
For the rest, the film is reduced to long static images and the momentum slowed down a bit. The first part of the film may have a too long run-in. For some, the calf will have already drowned before the good starts. Shame.
