Nice pictures of the mountains and Chamonix - a feast of recognition if you know it there, not only the village itself but also the mountains around it. And the Eiger, not bad either. And Mathilde Warnier in the cast and Matt Groom as an extra, how could it go wrong.

Well so. The story sucks - superficially it might still be true, but there isn't a climber in the world who really behaves like that, or in other words, I don't know them. Not so much in terms of risks, but the half-irrational way of dealing with them, in reality that is on a completely different level. And in a technical sense, they have the right things in their hands, but clearly unfamiliar. And the climbing movements are also wrong. Too bad, that really could and should have been better, Chamonix is full of people who would do better.

2* for the images and Mathilde, that's it.

I find movies about mountain climbing fun and exciting. Like "Touching the Void" after Joe Simpson's book.

Where "Summit Fever" goes wrong is the totally implausible irresponsibility of the protagonists. It lacks tension.

The script jumps around a bit. What it's all about is the storm they get into when climbing Mont Blanc. That needs a very long introduction. Alternating some climbing, drinking, fucking. There are as many deaths in that area in the few weeks as normal per season.

Simpson describes in his book more or less the same addiction of the alpinists to climbing. I believe that.

There are also beautiful images of the Alps.

The climbing actions are filmed from very close up. Pretty nice. But it should have been zoomed out more often so that you see the bigger picture, such as the positions of different groups of climbers.

All in all, it was a bit disappointing.

Michael [Freddie Thorp] is persuaded by his good friend JP [Michel Biel] to leave his office job for a mountain holiday in the Swiss Alps. Supported by a group of experienced climbers, Michael is persuaded to undertake three difficult climbs in the Bernese Oberland. Everyone is aware of the dangers, but for Michael this is a chance to push his limits and to honour his sister Lucy [Laura Ferries] who died while climbing a mountain. Ryan Phillippe is the big name in the cast and is part of the climbers in this episodic and repetitive mountaineering drama. The scenes in the hotel or in the pub are barely captivating, but as soon as the action moves to the mountains, Gilbey knows how to build up the tension and delivers a few great jump scares.
