At first glance, Alice [Anna Kendrick] seems blissfully happy with artist Simon [Charlie Carrick], until she says she has to travel for work when in fact she's going on a week's vacation with best friends Sophie [Wunmi Mosaku] and Tess [Kaniehtiio ] to celebrate Tess's 30th birthday. Alice is clearly not herself and Tess is not afraid to express her concerns and frustration about this Sophie tries to keep the peace for a long time. Kendrick delivers one of her best roles in a heartbreaking portrayal of a young woman drowning in insecurities and a devastating relationship. Nighy and screenwriter Allana Francis lend extra strength to this psychological drama through the sharp portrayal of a friendship and the powerlessness you can experience when you see your best friend threaten to go down.

Film about the psychological manipulation of a young woman by her boyfriend. Alarmed by her behavior, her best friends put a stop to this. Anna Kendrick, who I mainly know from comedies, plays a convincing role in this painful drama about mental abuse.

Alice, Darling is basically an unpredictable movie. A couple seems to be happy with each other. So nothing wrong. Will be a romantic story with the usual ups and downs. Slowly, however, the feeling creeps in that the film is not going to tell a romantic story if some irregularities become visible in the relationship very subtly.

The moment the irregularities seep through, the film can go in various directions. The film could take a dramatic side. Or if a mystery or a thriller can continue. Because the story focuses on the woman in the relationship, the film could even develop into a feminist character piece. It is strong that the film leaves the viewer in the dark for a long time about the chosen path.

A toxic relationship with possibilities. However, the further into the film, the more predictable it becomes. The story meanders along rather obediently. It seems to be a psychological drama that does not show challenging waves anywhere. Take, for example, the character sketch of the man in the relationship. It is very one-dimensional. A dominant, controlling and manipulative character without further layer. It's not much better with the coloring of the female character. Timid, submissive and mentally paralyzed are the qualities bestowed upon her in this film. Annoyingly simplistic and boring.

After introducing the characters, Director Mary Nighy lets the woman go away for a weekend with a few friends. Without a man, of course. The path the story then takes is easy to fill in. Before the obvious end arrives, many irrelevant scenes pass that keep spinning around the hot mush. In the end, the film does not get any further than sending the following message: leave your husband if he is not right for you. Wow! That is another revelation with impact. I really didn't see that message coming.
