Visually impressive but substantively quite depressing magical realist drama from Columbia. The story, about five street boys from Medellín who claim a piece of land that one of them has inherited after a long process of land restitution, has few bright spots and the perilous journey that the five undertake is quite gruesome at times, but the hallucinatory qualities of the film and the particularly atmospheric visual approach make the misery bearable.

Every continent has its own trauma that it cannot shake off: for Europe it is the church, for the US racism (slavery) and for Latin America the feudal inequality of landowners vs. those who own nothing. This film is about five criminal street kids in Colombia who can suddenly hope to obtain a dignified life because one of them inherits a piece of land that was stolen from his grandmother: in essence the film is a road movie in which we follow the adventures of the boys through Colombia to the Promised Land. And just as Latin American art is characterized by the style of magical realism, that is also the style of this film (although the magic is limited to the white horse that will represent that hope for an honest society as paradise and thus a better life for the boys). Still, the story couldn't really grab me: perhaps I didn't feel enough sympathy for the boys who only destroy everything, as a spiteful way to make everyone equal, which also confirms the cynicism of the violence that will destroy their dreamin their own behavior (and the national trauma that cannot be escaped, not even after some changes in the law to make society more just). For me, the film mainly relies on its high-quality aesthetics: the images are beautiful and make the film entertaining throughout.

What Richardus says, I can confirm. Still, this is not a film that everyone can relate to, the pace is too slow for that. But that is anything but a complaint. After all, a journey is more important than a destination. And this journey really says it all.

I've picked up a few things about Colombia here and there and don't know the country's full - recent - history all that well. Perhaps more depth would provide a better connection with Los Reyes del Mundo, but that doesn't mean you have no hold at all. The ultimate dream of escaping a hopeless life, which degenerates into a spiritual road movie, is more than enough to carry you along.
