Ezrah Mudag plot

Ben and his friend Raz have moved to an up-and-coming neighborhood in Tel-Aviv. They are now also ready to adopt a child which Ben especially wants. He plants a tree in front of their apartment building out of satisfaction with their new place. When he notices that the vulnerable tree is constantly being leaned against, one day he calls the police, who react with disproportionate force. The guilt about this continues to gnaw at him for the next few days and suddenly he questions everything; their new flat, the neighbourhood, their desire to have children and his relationship with Raz.

Ben [Shlomi Bertonov] and Raz [Ariel Wolf] have just moved into a spacious apartment in a not-so-cool neighborhood in Tel Aviv with the promise that a lot will change for the better in a few years. Ben also becomes chairman of the residents' group in the apartment complex and when he sees two guest workers leaning against a newly planted tree, he takes responsibility and calls the police. From his apartment, Ben watches how one of the two men is severely beaten upon his arrest and that event shakes Ben's certainties to their foundations. According to some sources a comedy, something that cannot be ruled out since Haguel's screenplay treads all kinds of goat paths and has a weak denouement. Well acted, yes.

In his feature debut, Israeli director Idan Haguel talks about the privileged gay couple Ben and Raz in a residential area in Tel Aviv where many migrants are housed. Haguel basically uses a light-hearted satirical tone. He sketches a situation in which he exposes many illusions of the characters belonging to the left-wing bourgeois. Characters who see themselves as progressive and cause quite a bit of turbulence with their well-intentioned and somewhat naive actions.

A tree planted by Ben initiates unpleasant events that in turn give rise to a sense of self-insight in Ben in particular. The events also prompt Haguel to change the tone of the film. The ambiance changes from airy, friendly to uncomfortable, oppressive. Suddenly the neighborhood where Ben and Raz live and which they saw as charming, turns into a horrible residential area where they, as a liberal gay couple with a desire to have children, no longer feel at home.

Haguel knows how to capture both the light-hearted and the uncomfortable atmosphere in delicate scenes. In this way, themes such as self-denial, classism and racism are attractively touched upon without being treated in very depth. Concerned Citizen identifies abuses, self-deception and disillusionment, does not use a pedantic and heavily emotional tone and that feels nice. Pleasant video.

A bit of a strange film. The positive thing about the film is that the couple is not portrayed as very gay and exaggerated, which is often done so stereotypically.

The negative thing about the film is that at some point the two men stop communicating with each other, which creates strange situations. That's a shame.

It's 'just' passable, but certainly not a high flyer.
