The Kyiv Files plot

In Ukraine, the Soviet KGB archive with numerous observation files has been made available to the public. What does it do to you when you find out that the state has been watching you for years? Through various encounters with people confronted with their file in the archive, the film sketches a time when the paranoia of the Soviet regime permeated the very fibers of personal lives.

The paranoia and fear that permeates a dictatorship, which teaches everyone to distrust everyone, which teaches people to remain silent, which makes them choose the other side of the street when they encounter a discredited acquaintance (read: Life and Fate of Vasili Grossman), even towards friends and loved ones, what can we actually experience or feel about that? That will always remain difficult for people like me who felt free, especially before the rise of social media terror.

It is not that friends communicated with each other at the table with notes and then put them in the stove, not by telling them that the telephone was full of microphones that makes the most impression, but the simple fact that he, the perpetrator, then, fifty or sixty years ago had felt real love for her, the victim, and still doesn't dare to admit it to us, and to herself.

Her great love at the time therefore seems like a deception. I would slap him if I met him now, says the deceived man. only to slip back into the sweet memory of the great sex she had in his friend's apartment.

At least that was real. The photos prove it to us. Disgusting.

It is a typical Dutch documentary, so it has a low information density and many atmospheric images - as if the story contains too little material to fill a film - so that the stories are told with difficulty and the documentary is somewhat boring, but the subject is interesting enough to remain to look.
