Ouch, this isn't very good.

Ryan Phillippe and Kate Bosworth may not be the first ones you think of when you are looking for an actor for a deeply felt character role, but they can really do something. It doesn't work out in this film, the only one who makes anything of it is Ving Rhames with his small supporting role. Bosworth in particular is notable for her irritating Hollywood fashion - and barely visible double nod at the end of each sentence, just to emphasize what she doesn't convey with her text and diction. Like your mother would do when she says something like "yes, really" when it's not quite right, something like that. I think that's super ugly.

But much worse is the plot, which is absurdly implausible and shaky on all sides. As is often the case, what goes wrong here seems to be the lack of belief in the outcome. It can't take that much effort to avoid this kind of crap - you only make this if you don't believe in it yourself.
