When documentary filmmaker Zoe [Lily James] learns that her neighbor and best friend Kazim [Shazad Latif] has decided to have an arranged marriage, she sees her chance. Under the working title “Love Contractually” she films Kazim and his family during their search for the right life partner and in the traditional run-up to the marriage ceremony with Maymouna [Sajad Ali]. Gee, how would this end? Asim Chaudhry is funny as Kazim's cousin Mo 'The Matchmaker' and Thompson pops in to be funny as Zoe's mother. James throws all her charms into battle, Shabana Azmi has some beautiful moments as Kazim's mother and the colorful festivities heighten the festive spirit. And the screenplay actually has a few surprising moments, although that certainly does not apply to the denouement.

Pleasant, colorful comedy about the ins and outs of an arranged marriage. Well acted, although Emma Thompson (as often lately) regularly goes off the rails, but that may of course also be the intention. I had a great time with this useful message about cultural differences.

Nice film about a woman who makes a documentary about her neighbor who is being married off. A great starting point for a romcom where the outcome is already clear in advance. The cultural differences were addressed, but it remained fairly superficial. It looks easy, although it drags a bit at the end.
