Wonderful film, as raw as it is warm. You initially follow a boy (Balli) who is extremely bullied, but after a while the perspective changes and the boy who takes care of him (Addi) becomes the main character.

That compassion is not welcome. Addi belongs to a group of three, a fighter and a follower, who initially have some difficulty with Balli being there all the time.

The boys are constantly testing each other. I recognize it from my own youth, that eternal cockerel behaviour, that kicking down to not end up in the lowest position myself. Fortunately, it was a lot less rough in our village than in Reykjavik. If you can't stand brutal violence, you should ignore this film.

The great thing about the film is that you can shoot those guys now and then, but at the same time you see that they all have a small heart, and that their misbehavior comes from somewhere. And so you constantly struggle with your own morality.

In any case, I thought it was nice to see how that bullied boy slowly thawed and got a little fun in life when he was introduced to the phenomenon of friendship. I also thought the modest magic sauce worked well, furthermore there was a nice tempo and the young guys acted excellently. What more could you ask for from a movie?

Just like the previous film Hjartasteinn (Film, 2016) by this director, this film is also an impressive and very nice coming-of- age movie. The (pubescent) behavior of the 14-year-old boys we follow is very realistic all the time so recognizable and although they can be bad boys there is little evil in them - certainly not in Addi telling the story - but the film shows that you cannot choose your own life, including your parents but also your friends, and that your environment partly determines your behavior and/or your fate. The boys are so empathetic both perpetrator and victim; they are cruel but also vulnerable. In addition, new things happen all the time so that the film has a nice pace and remains captivating from start to finish; there are also dreams and – under the influence of drugs – hallucinations that give the film an extra magical realistic layer full of symbolism or ominous premonitions. But above all, the themes of youth violence (which is covered in the press), domestic violence (which happens behind the front door) and friendship (which is so important for boys of this age and has both positive and negative effects) are addressed with integrity and sensitivity. brought to the fore.

Three teenage friends become intrigued by Balli [Áskell Einar Pálmason] after he appears on television for being so badly mistreated by a peer that his nose has been broken and, after some hesitation, decide to include him in their group. But personal and social problems cause great tensions with those around them. Guðmundsson manages to bring his young cast to unprecedented feats, and thanks to Sturla Brandth Grøylen's fantastic camera work, he creates an uneasiness, oppressive atmosphere in this deeply disturbing social drama with Lynchian undertones. Perfectly acted with special praise for Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Balli's stepfather. The best movie of the year.
