Luka plot

Young ambitious soldier Luka joins a regiment in an isolated fortress to take on a mythical enemy from the north. But it doesn't seem to show up. Luka wants to get away from that fortress where absurd and exaggerated rules, rituals and punishments apply until he gradually becomes captivated by the environment. The death of his only friend turns his life upside down, forcing him to choose between defending or challenging the laws of the fortress.

Luka [Jonas Smulders] volunteers as a sniper at a fort, where The General [Geraldine Chaplin] prepares her men for the impending battle with the enemy 'from the north'. What follows is a so-called 'rigorous training' full of homoerotic rituals (including an extremely lousy Haka) under the exceptionally inspiring leadership of the androgynous Raf [Jan Bijvoet]. It seems like it could turn into group sex at any moment, but don't worry: nothing happens for 70 minutes! Then there is an uninteresting incident that Woodworth (like the rest of the film) treats as if it were a melodrama. Full of meaningless silences, meaningful, meaningless looks and also filmed in moody black and white. If it wasn't so boring, I probably would have laughed out loud.

Daring film that makes the viewer swim quite a bit. I read about Dino Buzzati's novel, on which this film is based, that it has as many readers as interpretations. That probably applies to the film too.

There is hardly any plot, or at least it starts slowly. The film mainly sketches a world. That world is small, it consists only of a fortress in which a group of soldiers prepares for the arrival of the enemy from the north, who has not been heard from for generations. You see the rituals, you get to know the laws and rules that apply, and you get to know a few characters more or less.

Sometimes I felt more like I was watching a dance performance than a movie. It's mainly about atmosphere. It was an atmosphere in which I liked to be captured.

In the end, something like a plot develops, although it remains quite vague how things work out. As I already wrote, you can give your own interpretation to it. Or not, of course. I noticed that I actually had no need for explanations at all. It was good the way it was. Wonderful film to immerse yourself in for an hour and a half.

Fans of Béla Tarr will definitely enjoy it (although it may be a bit short for you). I also thought of Sputum and was convinced that this film had to be by the same maker(s), but it wasn't. I did see that Jessica Woodworth contributed to King of the Belgians. Then again, I didn't mind that. There you have it.

One beautiful photo after another. Fortunately, there was also some kind of story, in addition to atmosphere.

Otherwise it became unbearable.

The North had been expected for a long time, but suddenly it had to be found quickly.

Still a doubt between 3.5 or 4 stars.
