Freddie Mercury - The Final Act plot

On November 24, 2021 it was exactly thirty years ago that the legendary Queen singer Freddie Mercury (1946-1991) died of the effects of AIDS. Mercury's final years are captured in this documentary. In the film a lot of time and attention is devoted to Freddie Mercury's struggle with the disease AIDS. It says a lot that he didn't publicly confirm the rumors about this until the day before his death. Freddie Mercury wanted to keep making music until the last moment and the documentary shows how he succeeded, but also what it took from him. The second part of the film highlights the 1992 memorial concert performed by his musical friends, as a tribute to Freddie.

A documentary with two faces. Four stars for the first part in which we are taken into the last years of his life. Two stars for the second part in which we see the run-up and registration of the memorial concert. They would have done better not to cram both topics into one documentary. *3.0

Excellent, moving documentary that essentially does the same thing as The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness with which the documentary ends: pay tribute to the great singer, songwriter and entertainer Freddie Mercury and draw attention to all AIDS victims. The reason is the stigma that AIDS victims and gays would receive at that time: I remember that in the probably much more left-wing Netherlands, reporting from the start emphasized that AIDS is not a gay disease and that everyone has an equal chance of to get it (a politically correct lie that really bothered me at the time), but in the extremely harsh conservative, neoliberal climate in England (Thatcher) and the US (Reagan) in which preachers also rail against gays on TV, it would have been different as the documentary suggests so that standing up against homophobia was a great idea. And a tribute to the brilliant Freddie Mercury, who died much too early, is always a good idea.
