A somewhat one-sided but entertaining documentary about the life and work of Brian Wilson, the brilliant but at the same time suffering from schizoaffective disorder, the driving force behind The Beach Boys, among others. By having the constantly anxious Wilson drive around important places from his past with a good friend of his, journalist Jason Fine, memorable moments are sporadically relived, whether painful or not. Fine knows how to ask his questions very strategically, at times when Wilson is at ease.

Just like ABBA, The Beach Boys have undeniably made some very nice songs, but as a rock fan they are not bands of which I can listen to an entire album and I have never fully understood the idolization of Brian Wilson as pretty much the greatest pop genius. Bruce Springsteen, who tells in just about every documentary about a pop artist from his youth how much he has always idolized that artist – in this case Brian Wilson – is also not necessarily convincing because his main aim seems to be to present himself modestly and thus even greater. to grow as a 'just stayed' rock star. To make matters worse, Brian Wilson has also remained very ordinary: he looks like an average lonely old man who also says nothing interesting, so there is no indication that he is a celebrated pop hero or a mad genius (but luckily we still have the music). The documentary is nevertheless entertaining and you get the impression that you get to know Brian Wilson and his history - and with him to some extent that of The Beach Boys - well, so that it is certainly a success as a documentary.

Superficial documentary, necessary because Brian is notoriously difficult to interview. I assume the voices he hears in his head are real to him. But I have always wondered that at a certain point his difficult childhood did not become an easier to maintain screen between him and the outside world in which he started to find more and more faith and... support. Brian will also find it difficult to always be seen as that musical genius, which creates certain expectations, while he has the intellectual baggage of a big child. On the one hand shy and inaccessible, on the other hand competitive and outgoing with his music. In other words, conflicting qualities that he himself has not yet figured out. It's a shame that entire periods, albums and people have been skipped. What's sad is that the BB have degenerated into an oldies music band, and will never gain the relevance of the Beatles or a Springsteen. That would have been possible if Brian didn't have to pull the whole cart by himself. With the Beatles you are talking about three talented musicians who were also enhanced with the arranging talent of George Martin. There is some irony in the fact that things were not as sunny in Brian's life as his music initially suggests... Anyway, the Don Was documentary from 30 years ago was pretty much better.
