This Is Not a War Story plot

After a war veteran commits suicide, his mentor Will LaRue begins to blame himself and grapple with his own demons of war. He finds support in a community of veterans who can express their anger, humor, memories and hope through art and poetry. New to the group is Isabelle, who has just returned home to discover that her environment is still hostile. The two form a bond and gradually learn what it means to want to live.

A pleasantly slow build-up with which Talia Lugacy takes the time to tell her story - how things continue with the American soldiers after their role in the war is over. No pitifulness, no navel-gazing, although it may appear that way if you look superficially without empathizing or drop out before Sam Adegoke starts his monologue - are you thanking me for Abu Ghraib, or just for the pictures? The US has learned little from the Vietnam War, and the soundtrack - Luang Prabang - also rubs that in nicely.

Not a movie for everyone, that's for sure. But for me a very subdued, honest and above all human story that grips and lingers.
