Last Man Standing: Suge Knight and the Murders of Biggie & Tupac plot

"Suge Knight and the Murders of Biggie & Tupac"

This documentary takes a look at Death Row Records and how LA's street gang culture had come to dominate the business world. An association with corrupt LA police officers, who were also gang members, is also discussed. It would be this world of gang rivalry and dirty cops that would later claim the lives of the two greatest rappers in the world: Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.

Broomfield has built a reputation over 50 years as a journalist who is not afraid to investigate controversial topics and venture into worlds many of his colleagues have been afraid to enter. In 2002 he made his first attempt to find out the true cause of the deaths of rappers Notorious BIG and 2 Pac, but then he encountered a culture of silence that was motivated by fear of reprisals from Death Row Records founder Suge Knight. Biggie & Tupac relied mainly on the statement of LAPD Detective Russell Poole who held both Suge Knight and colleagues within the LAPD responsible for the deaths of the two hip-hop icons. In this sequel, Broomfield - greatly aided by his 'fixer' and co-producer Pam Brooks - manages to get an impressive amount and diversity of witnesses on camera who confirm Poole's theory now that Suge Knight is no longer a threat. The most notable contributions come from Suge Knight's protégé Danny Boy, 2 Pacs producer Leila Steinberg and Biggie's mother Voletta Wallace. Also includes unique archive footage of Biggie and Tupac making this a must for fans.

On the one hand, it gives a nice picture of the negative energy, originating from the gang culture, that hung around Death Row Records. Something that has come to the fore more often in recent years. The interviews with those involved are quite interesting and poignant in that regard. It also helps that colorful figures are interrogated.

But on the other hand it is also quite messy. The documentary does not say much, especially about the side of Biggie and Puffy, and seems to expect that the viewer already has ready knowledge of the material and has seen previous documentaries on the subject. The 'new insights' are also very much based on this.
