For most people, Rick James is that guy with the flashy suit and long black glitter hair from 'Super Freak', which formed the basis for MC Hammer's 1990 smash hit 'U Can't Touch This'. The first half of this documentary makes it clear that Rick James was already making music at a high level in the 1960s, including with Neil Young and other members of what would later become Buffalo Springfield, but that he was struggling to find his footing. A comparison with James Brown turns out not to be far-fetched at all, but family members and the musicians of 'The Stone City Band' make it clear that James had to reinvent himself to achieve great success, but also that his new image also became his downfall. Funk lovers should not miss this.

Cool documentary by the media company Mass Appeal, co-owned by rapper Nas. They know how to give a modern twist to something like that.

Rick James is, of course, an ideal subject, with his extroverted cult status and rise & fall life story. Nevertheless, the first part of the documentary is perhaps the most startling, when it is revealed that he ends up in Canada as an American deserter in the 1960s and starts his music career through The Band and Neil Young, among others.
