"The best director, the best actors, the best idea?"
A wealthy entrepreneur makes the impulsive decision to make a movie. Wanting nothing less than for it to be a masterpiece, he hires acclaimed filmmaker Lola Cuevas to manage the project. For the actors we look at the Hollywood beloved Félix Rivero and his colleague, the theater actor Iván Torres. The two can barely breathe. Except for 2 minutes in the movie Los amantes pasajeros, it's the first time we see Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz act together. It took a long time for both top actors to share the screen. Competencia Oficial starts rather slowly and mainly puts the actors in the front. It is a self-reflection on the film world and in particular the arthouse. With the question of what art is, what 'good acting' is and the world of the film.
The film balances on the thin line, because such films sometimes seem to be too good (the film world itself holds the mirror) or has the film world and less the viewer as its goal. But fortunately it is more than that. In the film, a rich man is going to finance a film because it wants to be commemorated after his death. But it can also be a bridge, it doesn't matter much because he doesn't know much about it anyway. It will be the film adaptation of a book, which he has not read, of course, but because the writer is a Nobel Prize winner, it must be good. Just like the choice of the director and the two actors who are mainly chosen because of their name and the awards they have won. In addition to the various winks (eg Antonio Banderas' character Felix has won 5 Golden Globes, while Banderas currently has 5 no-win nominations at the Golden Globes) there is also the layering of the film when there are several similarities between the film itself and the film in the film.
Competencia Oficial never becomes a big film and unfolds slowly, but it turns out quickly and fascinates the viewer in time. The three main actors are therefore fascinating to watch. But I also immediately noticed the film sets that provide a lot of breathing space and thus bring the actors to the fore. Beautiful images and shots with appropriate music. And the story is fortunately so much more than just two hours of philosophizing about the definition of a good movie.

On his 80th birthday, Humberto Suárez [José Luis Gómez], the owner of a large pharmaceutical company, decides to finance a film. Hoping for a masterpiece, he enlists award-winning, quirky director Lola Cuevas [Penélope Cruz] to film a story about the troubled relationship between two brothers played by the impulsive, mediagenic movie star Félix Rivero [Antonio Banderas] and the understated, classically trained top actor Ivan Torres [Oscar Martinez]. The screenplay is just a series of skits around clashing personalities and acting styles typical of this subgenre. The uninitiated viewer will regularly be able to chuckle at this thanks to the engaging cast, but don't expect Sunset Blvd or The Bad and the Beautiful.

A reasonable film about a film. Always intriguing when I see something like this pass by. Quite a pleasant interaction between the three main characters Cruz, Banderas and Martinez. The characters are presented somewhat as a caricature, especially with regard to Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas.
Two scenes do indeed stand out and make the film enjoyable as a whole, although I thought the bickering between the smug Felix Rivera and the more thoughtful Ivan Torres had something. The scene with the boulder and a little later the scene with the crusher were worth watching.
All in all a pleasant seat that will not fascinate everyone. For me a narrow "yes". Entertaining and at times witty.
