This film from Cameroon will soon disappear from Netflix, was on my list for a while, but I now took it as a priority. Based on true events about a fisherman's daughter whose future lies in succeeding her father as a local fisherman.

The gender inequality plays an important role in the film. Girls and women are subservient in this very patriarchal society. This concerns the classic tasks, but certainly also about following education. Teaching and studying is considered laziness, even the devil.

Arranged marriage is also discussed, which is nothing more than institutionalized pedophilia. Distressing. It never really gets sharp. The label of 16+ is a bit exaggerated, but it is not child-friendly either. I also thought it was technically and cinematically well done. Still some nice images here and there. The acting was mediocre, but ok. Sometimes it's hard to catch the movie.

Director Enah Johnscott, born in Wum in Cameroon, delivers a kind of critical interpretation of a certain African culture with this 143-minute film. However, that criticism only comes up in the second half, because first there has to be an inhumanly long build-up to give the very boring characters walking around here some depth. The over-sentimental direction is almost a parody of itself and that starts with the messy audio editing. Not only are certain scenes suddenly interrupted or cut off in terms of sound without cutting, but the loud music also clashes enormously with the quiet environment. It also destroys a lot of scenes that are intense in character, because once Johnscott plods over his terribly ugly music choices, that effect quickly disappears like snow in the sun. Faith Fidel, who was only 12 years old during the recording, gives a particularly strong performance and plays off her adult colleagues with great ease. The other characters are diverse enough in terms of personality, but are barely interesting because Johnscott always steers them in a predictable direction. The first half of The Fisherman's Diary is really catastrophically bad, but the second half has several strikingly strong moments, thanks to Fidel. In addition, it is always nice to see Cameroon up close, so this choice of film was not a shame afterwards. That father only really felt sorry for his daughter after it became known that she had been sold to pay off a debt, because when Fidel himself went to her father it almost didn't affect him. Well, of course I don't have any sympathy for that anymore.
