A Polish family is financially dependent on the money Krzystof [Michal Staszczak] earns as a construction worker in Ireland. When the family learns that Krzystof has died in an accident at work, 17-year-old Olka [Zofia Stafiej] decides to travel on behalf of the family to claim the body and sort out the formalities. It is also a chance for Olka to escape her bleak life, although she soon discovers how big the differences are between Poland and Ireland. She also has to fight the bureaucracy and try to raise the money to pay for everything. This multi-award-winning drama in its own country sketches the relationship between Poland and Ireland in a striking and entertaining way and is driven by a phenomenal leading role by 21-year-old Stafiej, who is present in almost every frame.

A strong debut by Zofia Stafiej; a true tour-de-force. A film about a somewhat cynical teenager from a poor family, who travels from Poland to Ireland to repatriate the body of her deceased father. There she is not only confronted with bureaucracy and indifference, but also with hidden aspects of her father's life, which she actually did not know at all.

A layered, moving film, which –as erik33 rightly notes– is reminiscent of the works of Ken Loach. Definitely recommended.

Dismal Polish drama film about a teenage daughter and mother who are faced with a very difficult situation. Director Piotr Domalewski uses the bleak surroundings of both the Polish and Irish landscapes to his advantage and creates a number of effective moments, despite the fact that I Never Cry does not have many highlights. Zofia Stafiej effortlessly holds the attention of the viewer with a leading role that exudes self-confidence and talent. The pace could have been a bit higher and the dramatic moments are not very strong, but the quality of the film remains consistent and the progression is interesting enough for a decent pass.
