Koozhangal plot
The inhabitants of the South Indian village of Arittapatti are completely dependent on agriculture, which is why the persistent drought is not doing well; the fields have turned into sandy plains. The women catch and roast rats. The men hang out, play cards, sleep. One of those men is Ganapathy, a chain-smoking drunk. His wife has fled the house and his loose hands, but he is determined to bring her back from her childhood village. He forces his young son to go with him. Ganapathy quarrels terribly with his in-laws and in revenge the son rips up the bus money for the return journey. Thus begins a thirteen-kilometer hike on one of the hottest days of the year.
