The Blazing World plot
Since she was six, Margaret has been haunted by the image of her sister's drowning. The accident happened during a fierce argument between her parents. Now, as a young woman, Margaret slips deeper and deeper into her own world until she is on the brink of suicide. She returns to her parental home where she finds herself in another dimension.

After reviewing the film, it's been deducted a half-point. Director Carlson Young deserves praise for a brave debut film where creativity is paramount, but The Blazing World ultimately succumbs too much to the source material that served as its inspiration. The film boasts several distinctive sets, a colorful design, and convincing performances in complex roles. However, the dramatic undercurrent is rather overly overstated, and certain "worlds" simply look too cheap, particularly in the desert setting. Moreover, the exceptionally long lead-up doesn't earn Young any points, but her potential is certainly noticeable, and she should certainly continue to pursue it in the future.
