A Thousand Cuts plot
In 2012, Maria Ressa founded the Philippine news platform Rappler, which now has more than 100 journalists. Rappler exposed the murders of alleged, often poor drug users, which President Rodrigo Duterte had carried out with impunity in the name of his "War on Drugs." The platform also exposed fake social media accounts that spread misinformation in Duterte's favor. Ressa faced personal threats and slander, including from the authoritarian leader himself.
