The Racer plot
"The race is won by the one who suffers the most"
Summer 1998. The opening stages of the Tour de France are moved to Ireland. Belgian rider Dom Chabol is in his late thirties and has been one of the best supporting cyclists of the Tour for twenty years. It's a sacrificial role - setting the pace, blocking the wind and providing support to help the team's sprinter to victory - winning is not an option. But Dom secretly desires to wear the yellow jersey one day, just once before his career is over.

Still a little surprised at the positive comments here. I am a little less enthusiastic about the film. A film that has often annoyed me. If you still want to do something around the TdF, do it big, but not like this. It didn't even remotely look like it. I always had the feeling that I was looking at a glorified fair race. No prologue here, ok, I can still live with that, but organizationally a few things didn't make sense.
I also found the cycling team itself very amateurish. Cold and chilly also with very unsympathetic cycling teammates, not to mention the Italian leader. Do you have to drive yourself out of the blue for that? The course itself in the stages was comedy capers of the highest order with silly falls and illogical tactical choices.
All quite unbelievable, also with cyclists who throw the flowers outside, approaching medical staff, riders who are not allowed to participate at first and then suddenly are allowed again, the team management who barely knows anything about the course, etc...
The dopage, on the other hand, is well portrayed. Hallucinatory even at times with that water and stuff. Not too much for the rest of this movie. Unfortunately...

Excellent film about an experienced professional cyclist who participates in the Tour de France as a servant and has never won a stage. The film is set during the 1998 Tour, which is characterized by a major doping scandal. The film manages to portray the physical and mental sacrifice that goes hand in hand with professional cycling, and the dynamics within the team also create tension.
