I fear I will soon forget this one. More than decent film, but I missed some spice. A fine design, admittedly, to interweave the reality and the dream world of Youri into one whole. Both worlds flow nicely into each other and the neighborhood where he lives also has a direct link with his great passion for space.

He finds the same passion and love in his neighborhood to which he is devoted. Enthusiastically and with some naivety, he tries to prevent demolition by literally fitting the rooms with new lamps and the walls with a lick of paint.

I especially thought the film came into its own visually aesthetically. Dreamy and magical at times. But now in hindsight the film does not stick, but that could just as well be me of course...

Film about a banlieu, but without the usual crime or violence. Instead, an occasional surrealistic drama about a boy who is the only one left in a neighborhood that is about to be demolished. In an empty apartment he builds his own magical world.

A socially engaged debut by the director duo Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh with a beautiful leading role by newcomer Alséni Bathily. Lyna Khoudri's strong performance as his Roma girlfriend is no longer a surprise.

Creative Banlieu video.

We start with the old images of how the new Gagarine neighborhood is proudly opened, but then we get to the point where the municipality wants to demolish the flats. And of course that doesn't suit everyone.

Including the two friends Yuri and Houssam. But what can they do, given their age?

But don't expect a Banlieu film in which riots and gang wars are central. The film manages to maneuver around the problem a bit. This produces beautiful images such as how a good coming of age should be. Especially when the Roma girl Diana intervenes, who comes from a place that also needs to be cleaned up by the government. Together they still try to make it in anticipation of fate.

But mainly the SF-like fantasy world of Yuri was an interesting fact. Depicting it in such a way that fantasy and reality almost seem to fade away. Very handsome. As if space itself is in the Banlieu itself for a moment... And maybe he will pass as a hero.

Very entertaining movie. Perhaps a little too distant and tame here and there, but otherwise a great achievement.

4.0*
