Freies Land plot
The year is 1992. In Germany, the two police commissioners Patrick and Markus investigate the disappearance of two sisters. The railway takes them to a community in a remote corner of the country. Patrick and Markus are convinced they are on the trail of the killer, but don't realize their lives are in danger.

Sombre German krimi, set shortly after the 'Wende' in northern Germany, in the swamp area behind the Baltic Sea, where a policeman from the west has to team up with a policeman from the former GDR to solve the murder of a number of young girls. That cooperation is somewhat difficult and becomes even more difficult when it turns out that the policeman from East Germany also has a Stasi past. It is a somewhat grubby film, set in a grubby landscape, and what is particularly striking is the gap between West and East.
The film is slow and takes more than two hours to reach the end point. I think it will take a bit long. I also found the actual denouement a bit disappointing, although it is in line with the story. The social problems and the backwardness in that part of Germany, which has not yet been completely made up, has been made clearly visible and tangible. A lot of work has been done on the occasionally original images. I doubt between 3 and 3.5 stars.
