De Veroordeling plot

"What If Fake News Becomes Your Reality"

Television journalist Bas Haan (Fedja van Huêt) creates his own monster when, in his investigation into the Deventer murder case, he is increasingly drawn into the camp of those who accuse 'the handyman' of murder. A media frenzy ensues, turning the life of the handyman and his wife into a true nightmare. Dismayed by this 'trial by media', Bas decides to fight the conspiracies with the facts, but to his frustration the image turns out to be stronger than reality. Has someone been wrongly convicted by a judge or is there an innocent victim?

I only knew the business by name, so it was very interesting to see how everything went. And that was quite intriguing. It's unimaginable that an ordinary citizen can just accuse someone of murder and destroy their life and in the end just get away with it. Because who still thinks about this when De Hond makes the news again with a poll?

However, as a feature film I found it a bit less suitable. I think it would have been better as a documentary. In my opinion, the film tried to be a kind of thriller (due to the soundtrack, among other things), but it lacked a certain tension. That is of course also difficult with non-fiction, but hence my first point. The story had a steady pace and didn't really come to a climax. But perhaps that's also what sticks out at the real thing; there is not 100 percent clarity.

The acting was above average for a Dutch film. I've seen Fedja van Huêt in stronger roles, but I was very impressed by his accent in this film. Here and there were some characters who still hinted at too much drama school, but there were also very good ones in between.

By the way, this was the first movie where I was able to try Subcatch. Dutch films are sometimes difficult to understand, and since Pathé still does not have subtitled performances or other facilities for the hearing impaired, this is a good alternative. With this app, the subtitles for the film will run on your phone. It worked very well, and in sync throughout the movie. The intelligibility in this film was generally fine, but still nice to be able to read back some mumbles every now and then. Hopefully the people behind me weren't bothered by it.

Finally, a half point deduction for the Amsterdam-West song during the credits. Totally misplaced and unheard of.

6.5/10

The story of the Deventer murder case based on the book by Bas Haan, the investigative journalist who threw himself into the case several times for Netwerk, thereby exerting both a negative and positive influence on the course of the case. When the court finds financial advisor Ernest Louwes [Mark Kraan] on appeal in 2004 for the murder of the widow Wittenberg in 1999, Louwes continues to claim that all the evidence has been fabricated. Bas Haan [Fedja van Huêt] is one of those who suspect that the so-called 'handyman' Michael de Jong [Yorick van Wageningen] is the actual murderer. When media personality Maurice de Hond announces that he has proof that makes him “100% sure” that 'the handyman did it', a nightmare begins for Michael and his wife Meike [Lies Visschedijk]. Intriguing reconstruction of a recent piece of history focuses mainly on the role played by the media in the smear campaign against De Jong and his wife and is a merciless rebuke to the many talk shows about the issues of the day that plague our television and the platform that they think they have to offer attention seekers like Maurice de Hond. I was ashamed of the archive footage in which Claudia de Breij serenades De Hond. Sad, but very well made and excellently acted, especially by Van Wageningen as the tormented, media-shy 'handyman'.

The Sentencing is more than just a movie. It shows that not everyone with a voice should be taken seriously. Maurice de Hond acted out of self-interest from the start and destroyed the lives of two people. Unbelievable.. Perhaps the worst thing that Mr. Louwes, again leads a civilian life. While De Jong is scarred for his whole life and everything is destroyed.

The title 'De Ververdeling' therefore reflects society at that time. People condemned Jan and everyone on the basis of a 'BN'R with an opinion'. Of which every allegation he made towards De Jong was made up. Didn't really have a decent argument anywhere, but was taken seriously everywhere. This is also partly due to Louwes' acting.

The era of the 1990s to mid-2000s is in any case an era full of miscarriages of justice. Take the De Puttense murder case, Schiedammer Park murder and De Deventer murder case. The Public Prosecution Service has fallen through the cracks time and again, with the result that lives are destroyed.

Other than that, it was a very impressive movie. Well played by Huêt and Wageningen and a good film adaptation of an eventful business. Another fine piece of journalistic work, by Bas Haan.
