"You Can't Choose Your Family"
Jan and Lea, parents of an apparently stable and loving family, raised their four children with the belief that they could prepare them for real life by teaching them how to persevere, never give up and be strong. A fantastic ensemble gives shape to a family drama, the basic premise of which smacks of cliché: when family head Jan Liefvisser [Jeroen Krabbé] can no longer hide the consequences of Alzheimer's on his health from his children, this arouses deep emotions in the entire family, with the As a result, old secrets and frustrations surface in a short time.
Although the comparison is not entirely valid, Van der Heide has made an ensemble film that is reminiscent of Robert Altman. Marnie Blok's screenplay offers all important characters (including Aiko Beemsterboer as a troubled teenage daughter and the disarming Liora Kats as a daughter who grows up without a father) the space to make an impact and the subtle acting of the well-directed cast makes "De Liefvangens " despite the many separate storylines, constantly manages to maintain an emotional tension and regularly moves. Somehow manages to be convincing and human, this film, despite being chock-full of clichés. I think it's because of the great pace, the solid acting (apart from Clemens and Maassen, who I didn't find particularly special) and that the whole thing is beautifully 'warm' filmed.
