Dutch Angle: Chas Gerretsen & Apocalypse Now plot

The originally Dutch photographer Charles 'Chas' Gerretsen suddenly became world famous in the 1970s with his then still small oeuvre. An adventurer from a young age and formerly a war photographer, he was invited by Francis Ford Coppola as a set photographer for the film Apocalypse Now on the basis of his war experiences. This documentary tells the story of Gerretsen himself and contains more than a hundred photos by Marlon Brando, Dennis Hopper and Martin Sheen, among others, and shows images of deleted scenes.

The photos taken are beautiful, but the whole is not very satisfying. The Apocalypse Now anecdotes are already known from various interviews and a documentary like 'Heart of Darkness'. Dutch Angle then feels too much like a film that wants to extol the value of Dutch filmmakers in such a way as: Apocalypse was a big hit and this Dutchman also contributed to it. That approach is not very interesting, because then you can better listen to the crew members who left a bigger mark on that masterpiece (Coppola, Sheen, Brando, etc.).

But Gerretsen's life is certainly interesting. A young boy who stood next to the violence of war to report on it. Unfortunately, that context is only touched upon briefly. I would have found his contribution to Apocalypse more interesting as a short episode, not as a main subject.
