Russian horror cinema will be relatively unknown to most film buffs. I count myself among the ignorant. So I looked up a Russian horror film, the content of which (with keywords such as 'cult', 'nightmare' and 'sleep laboratory') appealed to me.

I start positive. Visually, the film is a great film. Some beautiful atmospheric images, together with a beautiful dark setting, form the positive points of the film. Other than that it's nothing. There is no question of any appealing action. The story is jumpy and muddled and succeeds well in preventing the film from ever becoming exciting. The dialogues are dead and largely nonsensical. Predictable (and therefore ineffective) jump scares take turns. What a misery!

While some annoying surrealistic images suddenly unfold before my eyes, I seriously wonder what the point of this film is. What the hell is it about. I still have a good grasp of the whole broad line, but the finer points (which are undoubtedly there) elude me completely. They don't interest me at all anyway. The many glances at the clock tell me two things. 1. I'm bored and annoyed. 2. Time passes very slowly. Both observations are not pleasant observations. Never been so happy with end credits.
