Fine fine fine.

Ninomiya's first film was a huge relief, because after about 7/8 years without a 5* film I finally had a full score again. That only creates expectations for the next film of course, so when Chiwawa was finally announced I was also a bit afraid that the film would not be able to live up to it.

Fortunately none of that. Ninomiya shows here that his first film was absolutely no fluke. Not that Chiwawa can really match that film, but I hadn't counted on that either. I've been happy for a long time that Ninomiya shows here that he has his own style that he can apply in different ways.

Because although the intro is still reasonably lively and festive, this is a film that gets darker and more introspective by the minute. I thought the theme was beautiful and humanely developed, rather exceptional for a film that mainly chooses "club kids" as its main characters. And all without compromising much on the typical style of Ninomiya.

Mee, confirmation for me that Ninomiya can keep going for a while. I was 200% better than Chiwawa, the type of film I am sensitive to.

4.5* and a extensive review

As almost everyone has noticed, a cross between Spring Breakers and The World of Kanako. Two great movies. Too bad Ninomiya plagiarized Korine's film a few times. I think Chiwawa is more successful than The Limit of Sleeping Beauty, but still have enough problems with it. At the best moments, however, this is (again) very nice, especially the scenes with Asano are golden.

It is noticeable that it is a manga film adaptation, especially with that ever-muted aspiring filmmaker. That manga is from the 90s, by the way, while the film really portrays the current young generation. Other Okazaki films are for example Helter Skelter and [url=https://www.moviemeter.nl/film/1117428]River's Edge[ /url]. With the latter film, Onderhond wonders why the film is set in the 90s, but that is because the manga is also from the 90s.

Blessed,

It's no secret that I'm a fan of colorful films and this is another wonderful color feast. Film indeed mainly reminded me of The World of Kanako with perhaps a small touch of Spring Breakers. Plagiarism didn't really bother me. Doesn't matter too much, this movie actually takes that part a bit bigger than Spring Breakers does. Those dance scenes are really fantastic. Although next time Ken can match the bikinis of all the ladies (such a zebra thing with pink bottoms is actually a shame). Now there is no director who does that (yes Korine, but he "only" had 3/4 ladies), but Ken could well be someone who would. Well, budget / logistics thing, I think mainly.

Absolutely no criticism either, it just shows that he has set his standard really high. As said, this is again a very colorful video. Keep it impressive; is someone wearing a green shirt? Then you can say hello that you see something green somewhere in the background. Simple things like that make a shot so much more beautiful, but 99% of directors just don't do it. Hopefully Ken will continue to make movies for a long time to come, because I really can't get enough of this.

The only criticism is that the scenes without Chiwawa are not always interesting. It is mainly Chiwawa and the drama around her that steals the show here. Nice supporting role also from Asano. Add sublime sound design and you have another fantastic film.

4.5*
