Camino, een Feature-Length Selfie plot

Martin de Vries decides without any significant preparation to walk the Camino, the famous pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella: from Le Puy-en-Velay in central France to northwestern Spain, a journey of 1600 kilometers in almost seventy days. While walking, he films himself, his feet, his shadow, the path, the fields and the woods and tries to figure out why he embarked on this adventure. Fellow hikers and overnight places are only sporadically visible. While he points the camera at himself while walking, De Vries muses relatively soberly about discomfort and euphoric moments, about the beautiful morning light and the sound of the birds, about doubts and growing confidence. He learns to be 'in the moment' and gradually examines his motives and his demons more and more candidly.

Hm... I didn't really care. The landscapes are quite nice, but maybe I had hoped for more of a road trip kind of thing. I found it a bit boring and much of the same. I would have liked to see more villages and places and meet other people. In addition, I started to feel quite nauseous. Sounds crazy, but I think it had something to do with the image. That it was too sharp and moving for me. I used to have that with computer games. When the film was over half way through, I sat with my eyes closed a lot and I looked forward to the end. It's nice that he walked this long journey and continued. 2.5*

An experimental documentary in which Martin de Vries uses a selfie stick to describe his experiences while walking the Camino over a distance of about 1600 kilometres. Of course there are nice pictures of the environment and Martin is a fairly engaging personality, but the rigid visual structure and the verbal accounts of what he experienced do not testify to enormous depth. However, those who manage to persevere through the first half await a more interesting second part in which we get more clarity about the personal motives for this walk, as well as about the beneficial effect that this perilous undertaking appears to have. It may be a long and often tedious session, but it does make you consider putting on your walking shoes yourself. And those who like to take long walks themselves, know parts of the route or have walked, will enjoy this even more.

Weird.

As a documentary, in my opinion, it was totally unsuccessful. Someone apparently unprepared embarks on a long-distance hike and films himself doing so. It does not produce cool images, no interesting encounters or nice places that are discovered. No, it's almost an hour and a half watching an old guy sawing. In selfie mode. Nice though.
