I came across a reference to Nakadai - the actor of the incomparable leading roles in Seppuku and The Human Condition, and wondered how he is doing in the meantime. 91 already, and a whole list of films to his name - this is certainly not the last nor is the overview here on MM complete, but this Hatashiai was his most recent work, which I was able to quickly find.

And it turns out to be a somewhat simple TV film, with the associated production values. The most striking thing is the annoying repetition of a scratchy violin with the Greensleaves melody - that quickly becomes annoying. But the rest is also a bit mediocre - the narrative is thin and told in an excruciatingly slow manner, and it is certainly not very original. Still, Nakadai still holds his own with the action scenes, although the unusual flow is not really convincing.

Nice to have seen purely out of interest in Nakadai and his work, but for anyone who just wants to watch a nice film, I would say that you should look for another one.
