Wild Wild Country plot

Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (later known as Osho) preached freedom in every field, an attitude that caught on with his generally highly educated followers, the 'sanyassin', in the 1970s and 1980s. The movement decides to leave its home base of India and find a place for a utopian commune, in maximum freedom. The supporters settle in the American state of Oregon, where they buy a huge abandoned ranch (Big Muddy). Just outside the valley of Big Muddy is the town of Antelope, which was home to about fifty people in the early 1980s, which quickly caused a riot. Brothers Chapman and Maclain Way reconstruct the riot through vast amounts of archive material with extensive recent interviews.

Twee dingen had ik op voorhand niet verwacht. Dat ik sympathie kon opbrengen voor de progressieve idealen van de Bhagwanbeweging en hun pogingen om deze te vertalen naar een Amerikaanse gemeenschap. En dat Bhagwan Sri Rajneesh niet zelf de sturende kracht was achter de machtsmachinaties, maar zijn secretaresse Ma Anand Sheela. Een powerhouse van een vrouw voor wie ik het ene moment genegenheid voelde en het andere moment de koude rillingen kreeg om haar calculerende zakelijkheid. Het maakt 'Wild Wild Country' (2018) een fascinerend verhaal over de intersectie tussen neoliberalisme en de grondwettelijke vrijheden van religie/gemeenschapsvorming. In lijn met die gekoesterde Amerikaanse mythe: hoe een groep pioniers een stuk grond wist op te kopen en wilde vormgeven zonder inmenging van anderen. Onder het toeziende oog van de zevenenveertig inwoners van het nabije dorpje Antelope, die de komst van deze niet-christelijke nieuwkomers zagen als een inbreuk op hun eigen leefgemeenschap. Maar de Antelopians hadden het politieke tij en de instituties mee. Ik had graag meer meegekregen over de Bhagwanfilosofie en de realiteit van leven in deze cultgemeenschap. Ook omdat het juridische conflict soms iets te smeuïg wordt aangezet met suggestieve montage en bingevriendelijke cliffhangers.

Two things I did not expect beforehand. That I could sympathize with the progressive ideals of the Bhagwan movement and their efforts to translate them into an American community. And that Bhagwan Sri Rajneesh himself was not the driving force behind the power machinations, but his secretary Ma Anand Sheela. A powerhouse of a woman for whom one moment I felt affection and the next I got the chills at her calculating business. It makes 'Wild Wild Country' (2018) a fascinating story about the intersection between neoliberalism and the constitutional freedoms of religion/community building. In line with that cherished American myth: how a group of pioneers managed to buy a piece of land and wanted to design it without interference from others. Under the watchful eye of the forty-seven residents of the nearby village of Antelope, who saw the arrival of these non-Christian newcomers as an invasion of their own community. But the Antelopians had the political tide and the institutions with them. I would have liked to have learned more about the Bhagwan philosophy and the reality of life in this cult community. Also because the legal conflict is sometimes a bit too smooth with suggestive editing and binge-friendly cliffhangers.
