The strength of the film is that it is very believable: you really imagine yourself in Brazil in 1821 and the film seems to portray the real life of that time, both that of the black slaves and the whites and the mutual relationships between the two. The film is already successful and satisfying. The story is also believable and nice; However, you can see the climax coming from a mile away and it ends unsatisfactorily. The film also lacks fluidity. In short, the film is beautiful and fascinating, but the story is not told very well.

Super beautiful images in moody black and white, and that is clearly the strong point of the film, although you may have to be in the mood for it. Because, narratively, the film is very slow and long-winded and somewhat too neglected by the cinematography. Likewise, the characters are too stylized and therefore come across as unreal. Yet I believe that a reasonably accurate picture of life in Brazil two hundred years ago is given, despite the fact that the work on the land also remains somewhat underexposed. In any case, it is interesting to look at pictures, and that fits in well with the beautiful images.

Chapada Diamantina, Brazil, 1821. After his first wife [Dinah Feldman] dies trying to give birth to a son, cattle driver António [Adrian Carvalho] takes Beatrix [Luana Tito Nastas], the daughter of his brother Bartholomeu [Roberto Audio], as his wife, even though she is not yet sexually mature. While waiting for her to become capable of bearing children, António leaves her behind while African slaves run his ranch. Upon his return, António tries to father a child with his young bride. The beautiful black-and-white camerawork by Inti Briones and the attention to the living conditions and culture of the slaves are plus points, but the pace is slow and the melodramatic denouement rather predictable.
