It's the dead of winter in rural Massachusetts. Bob Tarasuk is a lumberjack in his fifties who also runs a small-scale farm. His son is also a woodcutter and they work together a lot, but it is difficult for them to get by. When the option to cut trees on a large plot of land with trees is sold, Bob sees the investment as an opportunity for the future. He uses almost all of his savings to get the job done. However, the investment turns out to be less favorable than expected. This brings the closed Bob's life into unsettled waters and he becomes unbalanced.
