The first Noir from the Fox studio and it is one that immediately uses many elements that would later become standard: flashbacks, interrogations and lots of shadows.

Victor Mature and Betty Grable are excellent in this noir, but it's the supporting actors who truly capture my attention. Elisha Cook Jr., but especially Laird Gregar, truly pull the story along.

A beautiful film, which unfortunately is never mentioned in noir references or lists!

4*

A delightful film noir. Much of the story is told in flashbacks, which is typical of noir murder mysteries. The script was sound, and the performances were convincing enough. But the real hero of this film, for me, is cinematographer Edward Cronjager, who creates an incomparable interplay of light and shadow. Truly a visual masterpiece!

A distinctive noir with a fair amount of humor. The most interesting aspects of the film are the scenes between Mature and the rather impressive Cregar, who creates a captivating character. It's a shame he died so young. It's also striking that Elisha Cook Jr. seems to appear in so many early film noirs; he's also in Stranger on the Third Floor and The Maltese Falcon. It incorporates many styles that would become classics of the noir genre. A very solid film with a plot that remains captivating.
