1989 plot
A young technocrat, Miklós Németh, becomes Hungary's new prime minister to save the country's horrendous economy. He decides to remove the device of expensive border controls from the state budget. Encouraged by rumors that Hungary's border with Austria will be opened, a young couple from East Germany decide to go for it. But Németh's decision has pitted him against formidable opponents and communist hardliners. The young couple becomes involved in the political power game, and the young man is shot dead at the border. This tragic event paradoxically accelerates Németh's final decision to open the borders, and soon after, the Berlin Wall falls.

Impressive documentary that clarifies in a very clear and insightful way how the fall of the iron curtain came about via Hungary. The fall of the Berlin wall was of course big news at the time. But what exactly preceded that was a lot more vague to me. So this documentary tells that story. Very educational.
