ps. I'm not a professional writer or critic, I'm just a movie geek with a keyboard.

The Walk is a story about a young man who follows his dream of walking on a cable between the WTC towers. This film was very light-hearted and halfway through it even felt like a cracking movie or an old-fashioned spy story. Joseph Gordon Levitt may not have played a charming character, but his passion and his faint accent seemed absolutely believable. The build was slow but the final walk over the cable was very satisfying and all the scenes on the towers are an impressive visual spectacle. The denouement was also a beautiful tribute to the majestic Twin Towers.

3.5*

Quite entertaining and even funny how the main character takes you to his adventurous "coup" and quite deserving how the dramatic end of the Twin Towers is not mentioned in any way.

Camera work and the entire setting is of course good and the actors are not too bad.

The film shows the preparation and execution of the art tour in considerable detail. Depending on the viewer's interest in this, the film may or may not be long-winded. You can't blame him for a lack of tension.

One of the few movies where I understand that it came out in 3D. Robert Zemeckis is a great storyteller, but has also been involved in 3D animation and motion capture for a while. That didn't yield any gems, so he went back to live action. In The Walk, Zemeckis can still enjoy digital effects, because a large part of The Walk is of course green screen. Not only because they didn't really want to put Joseph Gordon-Levitt on a rope at that height, but also because simply the Twin Towers are no longer there. Visually, there are quite a few nice highlights. It's not beautiful everywhere and sometimes it's really not even to look at (that bird is one of the most lousy things I've ever seen), but here and there the effects are quite convincing, that you almost get clammy hands.

Of course it is about the moment that Philippe is on the cable. If you want to see that, you have to be patient, because first a love story has to be built up, we have to know in detail how Philippe got to know his photographer and we see Ben Kingsley in the role of grumpy mentor. Levitt and Kingsley are mainly cited as big names, because the fact that two Americans have been cast in non-American roles makes no sense at all. Drama just doesn't come across as much if you always feel like you're watching an episode of 'Allo 'Allo! is watching. The actors - including Kingsley and Levitt - do their best, but nothing comes further than just good solid acting, probably because their characters aren't very interesting either. The most interesting thing about The Walk is the story of how Philippe managed to pull off this fantastic and illegal stunt and Zemeckis does that part quite skillfully. Everything around it is just kind of bland.

3 stars.
