Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness plot

Joe Exotic is a quirky country music singer who also owns a feline park in the state of Oklahoma. Charismatic but misguided, Joe and an incredible cast of characters including drug lords, con artists and cult leaders all share a passion for big felines and the status and attention their dangerous menageries garner. But things take a dark turn when Carole Baskin, an animal activist and owner of a large cat sanctuary, threatens to shut down his business. This sparks a rivalry that eventually leads to Joe's arrest.

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness season 1

Somehow understandable that this could become a cult hit. Colorful subjects in and a fantastic atmosphere sketch of the underground tiger environment where high crime and exotic animals come together. As is often the case when it comes to American excesses: everything cries out for better regulation, but (wrongly) influential parties draw their identity from its continued existence. Tigers or firearms, it's all possible. I thought seven episodes was a bit generous for the sensationalistic approach with which twists and turns are created with clever editing. Also bland in the sense that the focus is very much on the tasty underdog crazies themselves and less on dry facts. How can legislation and enforcement fall short with this insane subculture? And more importantly, what should be done to curb this in concrete terms? It doesn't really work that the actual issue - animal welfare - is turned into some sort of oddity show between individuals like Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin. Only at the end does a somewhat sad message arrive that it is really disgraceful what is happening here, while we could feast on this nonsense all the while.

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness season 1

Man man man. What a docuseries. Really, this is what I love. One big freak show. Saw it for the second time last week. It never ceases to amaze me that most of this, if not all, is true.

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness season 2

Just like the second season of Making A Murderer, completely redundant and only brought into existence because of the success of the first season. Of course we knew that Joe Exotic's participation would be limited given that he is currently behind bars but this is a bit ridiculous considering it is still called “Tiger King” after all.
