Raoul Heertje is best known as a comedian and few know that he is Jewish. Frans Bromet is a well-known program maker and also Jewish. Together they travel to Israel. If you will it, Dude, it is no dream. Afl. 7 is erg interessant. Heertje raakt (weer) oprecht geëmotioneerd wanneer hij twee vaders (de één Palestijn, de ander Israëlisch) ontmoet die beiden een dochter(tje) verloren aan het conflict, maar tóch samen vredig strijden voor een oplossing. Hij (Heertje) blijkt echter geen echte journalist, wat zowel voor - door zijn emoties die mij raken - als tegen hem werkt - wanneer hij elders in de aflevering in gesprek gaat met mensen die bepaalde politiek en acties van Israël proberen te verdedigen en hij niet voldoende weerwoord biedt (iets wat hij tot deze aflevering toch echt wel voldoende deed, of anders Bromet wel). Er is geen oplossing voor het conflict, dat zie ik nu wel in, want Israël zal nooit het land teruggeven aan de Palestijnen en dat is in de kern wat de meeste Palestijnen echt willen...^ Wat Israël wél kan doen, is de Gazastrook en de Westelijke Jordaanoever aan de Palestijnen laten, mensenrechten laten zegevieren en indien nodig(!) zich verdedigen tegen terreur. Zo moeilijk is het allemaal echt niet. Maar ja, wie ben ik...? Ontzettend goede serie, heb de laatste jaren weinig betere gezien. Hulde aan Heertje en Bromet! ^ D.w.z. zolang de V.N. en Amerika wereldmachten van betekenis zijn.

ep. 7 is very interesting. Heertje gets (again) sincerely emotional when he meets two fathers (one Palestinian, the other Israeli) who both lost a daughter to the conflict, but still fight peacefully together for a solution. However, he (Heertje) turns out not to be a real journalist, which works both for - because of his emotions that affect me - and against him - when he talks elsewhere in the episode with people who try to defend certain politics and actions of Israel and he doesn't offer enough rebuttal (something he did enough until this episode, or else Bromet did).

There is no solution to the conflict, I can see that now, because Israel will never give the land back to the Palestinians and that is essentially what most Palestinians really want...^ What Israel can do is the Gaza Strip and leave the West Bank to the Palestinians, let human rights prevail and if necessary(!) defend itself against terror. It's really not all that difficult. But hey, who am I...?

Very good series, haven't seen much better in recent years. Tribute to Heertje and Bromet!

Een prima ego-documentaire over hoe Raoul Heertje en Frans Bromet kijken hoe hun eigen 'joodse identiteit' zich verhoudt tot de staat Israël. Wat betekent joods-zijn in een staat waar deze etnische/religieuze groep de dominante factor is? Voor Heertje een pittige confrontatie met mensen met wie hij een geschiedenis deelt en die een soms radicaal andere kijk hebben op de hete hangijzers dan hijzelf. Bromet is meer de registrerende observant wiens kenmerkende bromstem soms ongemeend scherp uit de hoek komt. In de verte heeft deze serie wat raakvlakken met 'Natascha's Beloofde Land' (2018) door Natascha van Weezel, maar het duo Heertje/Bromet zijn ietwat doortastender en zoeken zelf meer politiek geladen onderwerpen op. Het is ook heerlijk ongemakkelijke, spannende televisie om deze 'angry old men' lijnrecht in te zien druisen tegen staatspropaganda en geschiedvervalsing. Vooral Heertje is er een meester in om met z'n Hollandse botheid zijn gastvrij ogende geïnterviewden voor het blok te zetten en ze te dwingen om een positie in te nemen. Al moet ik ook zeggen dat de serie gaandeweg wat aan kracht inboet, omdat Heertje's ambigue relatie met het Israël uit z'n jeugdjaren een nodeloze herhaling van zetten wordt. Zelf had ik bijvoorbeeld minstens een aflevering verwacht over de omgang met etnische minderheden (zoals Ethiopische joden) die buiten diens vriendencirkel vallen.

An excellent ego documentary about how Raoul Heertje and Frans Bromet look at how their own 'Jewish identity' relates to the state of Israel. What does being Jewish mean in a state where this ethnic/religious group is the dominant factor? For Heertje, this is a tough confrontation with people with whom he shares a history and who sometimes have a radically different view of the hot topics than himself. Bromet is more of a recording observer whose characteristic humming voice is sometimes unbelievably sharp. In the distance, this series has some common ground with 'Natascha's Promised Land' (2018) by Natascha van Weezel, but the Heertje/Bromet duo are somewhat more decisive and seek out more politically charged subjects themselves. It is also wonderfully uncomfortable, exciting television to see these 'angry old men' go head-to-head with state propaganda and falsification of history. Heertje, in particular, is a master at putting his hospitable-looking interviewees on the spot with his Dutch bluntness and forcing them to take a position. Although I must also say that the series gradually loses its power, because Heertje's ambiguous relationship with Israel from his youth becomes an unnecessary repetition of moves. For example, I would have expected at least one episode about dealing with ethnic minorities (such as Ethiopian Jews) who fall outside his circle of friends.
