Spinal Tap II: The End Continues plot

After 41 years, the now-estranged band members of Spinal Tap—David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls—are forced to reunite for one final concert. This also marks the resurrection of documentary filmmaker Marty DiBergi, who once again attempts to capture his favorite metal gods as they contemplate mortality—and the hope that their twelfth drummer won't join them in the afterlife. Along with music luminaries Paul McCartney and Elton John, Spinal Tap grapples with their troubled past to deliver a concert that will cement their place in the pantheon of rock 'n' roll.

A good film in which the band Spinal Tap reunites after years for one last concert. A belated and unexpected sequel to one of the best mockumentaries. A bit of a rehash, and sometimes lacking the charm of the original. Nevertheless, it's entertaining and delightfully ridiculous at times. A few great cameos too. A small 3.5 stars.

Forty years after directing This Is Spinal Tap, Marty DiBergi [Rob Reiner] returns with another backstage documentary about the metal band Spinal Tap, this time in the lead-up to a reunion concert they're contractually obligated to perform. It's tricky, as Nigel [Christopher Guest] and David [McKean] haven't seen or spoken to each other since a falling out 15 years ago. It's up to Derek [Harry Shearer] to be the glue that holds the band together despite everything. Marty also connects with others involved in the infamous 1984 "Smell the Glove" tour, and several musical luminaries contribute their thoughts. This daring, belated sequel relies heavily on nostalgia and nods to 40 years ago. There really wasn't much more to it than that, so Guest, McKean, Shearer, and Reiner likely made the most of it. Many of the best jokes come during the credits! Reiner's final film, which he died in December 2025.

Now seen. Fun as a light snack.

Right in line with all those 'real' documentaries that take themselves seriously.

I would definitely make sure you know the original, otherwise don't even start this one.
